Portrait entries raise bar

19 Sep, 2008 09:57 AM
BDAS president Marika Schmidhofer expects the standards of the 2008 Berkelouw Self-Portrait Prize to be the best yet.

Over the next 10 days, 114 self-portraits will be on display at BDAS Gallery, including Bev Davies’ winning piece Self Portrait with Father and Daughter.

“The quality of work has been outstanding from artists that have had their work exhibited in the Dobell, Archibald, Blake and Portia Geach Prize,” Ms Schmidhofer said.

Now the third time competition held since 2004, the format has changed to require artists to submit self-portraiture.

“The decision was made by Leo Berkelouw, Sylvia Dewey and myself to change it to reinvent the competition and provide a new focus for the artists,” Ms Schmidhofer said.

“The response has been magnificent, and I know Leo [Berkelouw] was really impressed with what was on show.”
