Southern Highlands police are cracking down on drink-drivers, as a statewide Christmas holiday period operation is launched today.
Southern Highlands police will join police throughout NSW, Victoria, South Australia and the ACT in Operation RAID (Remove Alcohol Impaired Drivers).
RAID is the nation's biggest drink and drug driving operation ever, and will involve hundreds of general duty officers and police officers from specialist units and highway patrol units.
Armed with provisional data gathered by police last year, which pointed to alcohol as the contributing factor in at least a quarter of road fatalities in southern NSW, police in the Southern Highlands will step up their operations targeting drink drivers.
Southern region traffic co-ordinator senior sergeant Mick Timms said Operation RAID would serve to focus public awareness on drink driving.
