Police on the hunt for buggy burglar

27 Jul, 2009 11:43 AM
IF you see a golf cart being driven around the Mittagong area it’s not a golfer chasing a lost ball.

Earlier this month two golf carts were stolen from Highlands Golf Club.

One was found in a creek behind Highlands Marketplace, off Sunset Point Drive, but the other one is still missing.

Neville Cooper, who owns the missing cart, wants his $3000 cart back.

The brazen theft annoys Mr Cooper but having to replace the cart. because his insurance ran out last October, is his biggest gripe.

Police have no leads or suspect and only a broad description of two youths in hooded jumpers.

Thieves raided the shed housing the private member’s carts over three consecutive nights from July 6 to 8.

On the first night they stole three carts.

After joy riding one around the course they returned it to the shed with and stole two other carts. The thieves tried to steal a third cart on July 7 but after the alarm sounded they fled, leaving the cart on the course.

The thieves returned on July 8 and tried to steal another cart but were disturbed and left empty handed.

Mr Cooper said he found a sand bucket, golf glove and towel on Ironmines Oval, Sunset Point Drive and Alexandra Square.

He said a cart was stolen from the club roughly a year ago.

Mr Cooper said he was surprised the thieves were able to drive the cart along the narrow bridges at Alexandra Square. He uses his cart to play golf twice a week because he has a sore knee.

Mr Cooper was not confident he would get his cart back.

“There is very little chance I’ll get it back,” he said.

“No one has come across it in two weeks. I never thought any bugger would ever pinch it.”

Mr Cooper said the alarm system wasn’t turned on the first night. A club official denied this. The club takes no responsibility for members’ carts stored at the clubhouse.

Mr Cooper said he hoped the thieves would be caught eventually.

“I hope they catch the young buggers because they’ll do more damage next time than pinch a few golf carts,” Mr Cooper said.

Highlands Golf Club secretary manager David Fenner said the club had some vandalism issues. He said flagsticks were sometimes found in rivers but security regularly patrolled the area.

Anyone with information on Mr Cooper’s missing cart should contact Bowral Police on 4862 9299.
