Police issue Bong Bong races warning

22 Oct, 2003 01:48 PM
Organisers of next month's Bong Bong Picnic Races have a simple message for those thinking of driving to the races and drinking and driving - don't even think about it.

The police are expected to be out in force for the November 12 event with the State's Random Breath Testing taskforce in the area with 20 mobile units on local roads.

"They'll be 20 mobile units testing in the area, so anyone who drives (when they're drinking) has got to have rocks in their head," Bong Bong Picnic Race Club Chairman Sandy Walker said (right).

With this in mind the club will run courtesy buses to and from the races to the town centres of Sutton Forest, Moss Vale, Bowral and Mittagong.

Six buses will be operating in the morning of the races, while eight buses will ferry patrons home.

The club introduced the concept for the first time last year with great success with a significant decrease in cases of drink-driving.

"The year before last there was several cases of (the police) catching people DUI (driving under the influence), but last year there were none," Mr Walker said.

"We put the buses on for the first time, with council approval, and it was a great success and they were so packed out you couldn't fit another person in.

"We didn't even have a lot of time to advertise them, so we were pretty pleased with that."

As another deterrent to people driving home under the influence of alcohol, a voluntary breathaliser will be in operation for patrons to determine whether they are over the limit or not.

In the morning of the race meeting four buses will leave the Sutton Forest Inn and pick up patrons at the big clock in Argyle Street, Moss Vale, starting at 10am and running on the half hour until 11.30am.

Punters can also catch transport from Mittagong and Bowral Railway Stations at 10.30am and 11.15am.

For the trip home, four buses will take patrons to Moss Vale and Sutton Forest at 5pm, 5.30, 6pm and 6.30, and another four will take people to Mittagong and Bowral at 5pm, 5.30pm (two buses) and 6.15pm.

Catching the bus to the races will not cost you anything, but if you get a ride home it will cost you $10.

Entry to the Bong Bong Races is only open to members of the Bong Bong Picnic Race Club, with membership packages still available.
