PM's brother could still be prosecuted

29 Mar, 2006 07:16 AM
Prime Minister John Howard's brother Stan may still face penalties for removing endangered trees from his Bowral property, despite Wingecarribee Shire Council's decision to negotiate an out-of-court settlement.

The Humane Society International is pressing the State Government to prosecute the Howard family for the removal of up to 70 trees from an endangered ecological community on Wallingwood last year.

Wingecarribee Shire Council voted before Christmas to prosecute Mr Howard - or his wife Caroline, the owner of the property - for clearing the trees.

But council voted last week to negotiate a settlement with the Howards and the clearing contractor.

Under the proposed settlement, the Howards would be required to replace trees on five acres of the Horden Road property.
