 Pines are 'terrorists'

Pines are 'terrorists'

24 Sep, 2003 09:13 AM
The wrangle over a humble Southern Highlands pine tree rages on with one furious Berrima resident branding them as "environmental terrorists".

Lee Coulson from Berrima Glen Bed and Breakfast has joined the war against the leylandii cypress pine after a neighbour planted nearly 100 of the towering pines along a bordering fence.

Mr Coulson has called for tighter restrictions on the planting of the tree and issued a dire warning to any councillor that supported the spread of them.

"Planting these trees is an act of environmental and economic terrorism and flies in the face of expert opinion from the Rural Fire Service, Nurseryman's Association and governments of the EEC," Mr Coulson said.

"They cause unbelievable destruction and can grow up to 100 feet high and one fifth of that in spread.

"I understand Cr Nick Campbell-Jones recently planted 100 of these trees on his property and considers it 'ridiculous' that anyone would be concerned about them.

"Perhaps he would like to contemplate that when the election comes around."

Cr Duncan Gair issued a notice of motion at the September 10 council meeting designed to restrict the height of the trees but met with fierce opposition from Cr Campbell-Jones.

Mr Coulson claims the impenetrable pines will encroach on his property, sterilise the surrounding soil, completely block out light, kill their native fire retardant screen, vegie garden, and even rot the house paint.

"They destroy trees around them, deny us light and air flow and are extreme fire hazards," Mr Coulson said.
