Highland residents hoping to set firecrackers off this New Year's Eve had better think again following a WorkCover cracking down on illegal use during the festive season.
Minister for Industrial Relations John Della Bosca said people buying and using fireworks without a WorkCover permit should be aware they risk on-the-spot fines of up to $1100 from police officers and WorkCover inspectors.
"They're jeopardising their own safety and the safety of their friends, family and neighbours," Mr Della Bosca said.
In addition to the on-the-spot fines, Mr Della Bosca said the courts could impose substantial penalties.
Mr Della Bosca said the courts penalties included fines of up to $5500 for the illegal sale of fireworks and fines of up to $11,000 for using fireworks without a permit.
"Courts can also impose jail terms of up to 12 months," he said.
WorkCover can only issue a permit when an applicant can satisfy a series of strict criteria, which include providing a suitable site distant from homes, hospitals, nursing homes and churches.
The permit holders must also gain advance approval from the police, fire brigade and neighbours.
