Councillor Paul Tuddenham has big plans for the Tulip Time festival, unfolded to the Moss Vale Chamber of Commerce as part of his election bid.
Cr Tuddenham is one of the current councillors nominated to go on the Tulip Time Committee to look at restructuring the festival and maintaining it in the future.
He said he would like to see one person employed to organise and promote Tulip Time, then retained for the rest of the year to promote Brigadoon, the Cockatoo Run Swirl and other festivals.
"So when they're out there inviting people to come to Tulip Time, they're also inviting them to come to Brigadoon and other events," Cr Tuddenham said.
"That way they're not just promoting one town and one event but the whole region and a year's worth of events."
Cr Tuddenham said he wanted to see council's focus on tourism widen from treating each event in isolation to using the events to promote the whole region throughout the year.
He also suggested broadening the Tulip Time Festival itself, moving it from Corbett Gardens to a bigger location like Loseby Park and involving the whole region more.
Cr Tuddenham said one of the biggest obstacles to successful marketing of the Highlands as a tourist destination was the parochialism of the towns and villages.
"We've got to break down this parochialism where people won't work with other towns," he said.
"We will still retain our pride in our towns but stop blocking other events just because they're not in our town."
Cr Tuddenham said attractions like Belmore Falls, Joadja and Throsby Park needed to be better promoted.
