Wingecarribee Shire Council will use additional revenue of $1.28 million from next year's proposed rate rise to upgrade public swimming pools, sports fields, playgrounds public halls, cycleways, carparks and parks, as well as performing additional road maintenance.
Acting on comments arising from last year's public meeting, Council at last Wednesday's public meeting provided additional information on how the proposed rate rise would be spent in 2004/05.
The $1.07 million in additional rates raised in stage one of the IRS would be used to renovate 20 sporting fields, maintain playground equipment, landscape some roundabouts, mow cycleways and maintain trees, as well as being spent on bushfire management, roadside mowing, bushcare in reserves, noxious weed removal, swimming pool maintenance and floral gardens.
Stage 2 IRS funds have been earmarked for projects including:
l maintenance and upgrading of the Mittagong, Moss Vale, Bundanoon and Bowral swimming pools ($55,000) and loan repayment for capital works at the Mittagong pool from 2003/04 ($90,000)
l sports field renovations ($155,000)
l tree maintenance to address backlog of work on roadside reserves ($290,000)
l bushfire hazard reduction ($119,896)
l repairs and upgrading of the Civic Centre and a new PBX phone system ($60,000)
l repairs, renovations and facilities for halls and other property ($90,000)
l maintenance of paving, lighting and street furniture in the Mittagong CBD ($13,000)
l new shire entry signs at eight locations ($40,000)
l resurfacing of one carpark, remarking of lines in one additional carpark and routine sweeping and litter collection in carparks ($30,000)
l resheeting of an additional 7.3km of gravel roads ($157,000)
l resealing of 22km of sealed roads
l upgrading of stormwater drainage system next to Moss Vale TAFE to control erosion problems ($150,000), and
l construction of stormwater drainage wetlands and litter traps ($20,000).
Funds will also be allocated to upgrading and maintaining footpaths and cycleways, general shire clean-up, controlling noxious weeds along waterways and roadsides, more frequent mowing of roadside reserves and gardens, better maintenance of Corbett Gardens and the main floral gardens of the shire, more frequent maintenance of CBD toilets and twice yearly steam cleaning of all toilets to remove graffiti, plus an expanded street sweeping program to include twice yearly sweeping of every residential street.
A second public meeting to discuss the rates increase proposal will be held today at 4pm at the Moss Vale Theatrette.
