A proposal that Wingecarribee Shire Council look at establishing a tourist park in Centennial Park, Bowral, has been endorsed by council's Economic Development Committee.
The Economic Development Committee has endorsed the concept put forward by Bowral Ratepayers Association and will recommend that council investigate the availability of Centennial Park and alternative sites.
The Bowral Ratepayers Association has proposed a tourist park with facilities such as cabins, powered sites with ensuites, a "bunkhouse" catering for group tours, a camp kitchen and amenities blocks to cater for travelling campers, caravanners and motor homes.
Bowral Ratepayers Association member Kevin George told the Economic Development Committee this week that although Moss Vale and Mittagong had caravan parks, the total number of sites available to travellers at the two parks was 34, with the other sites occupied by permanent residents.
Caravans, motor homes and tent/trailers were the fastest growing segment of the tourist market, with 15,800 new caravans and 1700 motor homes sold in Australia in the past year, he said.
"We're not getting any of that (market)," he said.
"We don't see them because there's nowhere for them to stay."
Mr George said business people he had canvassed were enthusiastic about the proposal.
The proposed location at Centennial Park would be within sight of only three dwellings and would be screened by Centennial Road by trees and the fall of the land, he said.
