Moss Vale's Brian Whyte was named Wingecarribee Shire Citizen of the Year at Australia Day celebrations in Berrima on Wednesday.
Mr Whyte was recognised for his contribution to the Southern Highlands in the areas of business, community, sport and tourism. A director of the 110-year-old clothing retailer Whytes, Mr Whyte is patron and life member of Moss Vale Basketball, a founding member and past president of Moss Vale Golf Club, a Rotarian and long-time member of Apex.
Receiving his award from Mayor Gordon Lewis, Mr Whyte said his involvement in sporting groups and the community had given him a lot of pleasure.
"One doesn't do anything other than for the pleasure of it, and the pleasure of the people who receive the results of your efforts," he said.
Mr Whyte urged the audience at the Berrima Court House to work to the best of their abilities to keep the Southern Highlands moving forward.
"This is a wonderful and beautiful place to live," he said.
Bowral High School students Brooke Eccleston and Melissa Perrine were jointly named Wingecarribee Shire Young Citizens of the Year.
A cystic fibrosis sufferer, Brooke has devoted much of her time and energy to helping others with chronic illnesses, working to raise money for St Vincent's Hospital and Westmead Hospital.
Brooke has been a peer support leader and is a member of the prefect body at Bowral High School.
