On the beat

Bowral shoppers and shopkeepers alike might have wondered what was happening on Friday a little after lunch when they were confronted by members of the local constabulary.

What they will have seen in the first of an on-going program to make sure police are kept up to date with happenings in the Bowral CBD.

Bowral Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, Terry Oakes-Ash, was joined by Camden Local Area Command boss Superintendent Patrick Paroz, Bowral Station boss Inspector Brian Daley and Bowral station Sergeant Paul Fryer on a fact finding mission.

The group walked through Bowral, stopping at shops and talking with retailers and shopkeepers.

Supt Paroz said is was all about getting to businesses.

"It is the first step in building up a profile," he said.

"We want to hear from businesses."

Mr Oakes-Ash said the Friday's meeting came as a result of his involvement with a group called the Police Accountability Community Team (PACT).

From discussions with the PACT group, Sgt Fryer has become the Police representative on the Bowral Chamber of Commerce and has taken up the role of liaison officer for dealing with businesses.

Supt Paroz said during the discussion with business people in Bowral it had become apparent that many minor acts of crime were not being reported.

"Most people think their individual problems are only minor, but you add up the minor problems and you've got a big problem," he said.

Sgt Fryer said as a result of members of the public reporting minor incidents, the local police would be better able to task their resources.

"Without knowing what's happening the police can't help," Sgt Fryer said.

He said knowing when certain incidents happen on certain nights, or at certain times, a pattern could be formed and police resources best tasked to stop these crimes.

Supt Paroz stressed that there was not a major problem inn Bowral, and the visit was one way to help the police stay in front.

Mr Oakes-Ash said the success of Friday's walk through Bowral meant the Chamber and police would make it a regular event, doing it every three months.
