NRMA Careflight choppers two injured Southern Highlands boys

30 May, 2009 06:33 PM
THE NRMA Careflight helicopter had to fly two boys out of the Highlands on the weekend.

In the first incident, a teenage boy was flown to Westmead Children's Hospital after he fell from a window at his Burradoo home on Friday afternoon.

The boy, 14, lost consciousness and ambulance officers alerted the trauma team at 4.30pm.

The helicopter landed in the nearby pony club field to allow the crew’s doctor to treat the boy at the Burradoo Road address.

The CareFlight doctor said while the boy had quickly regained consciousness it was decided to fly him as a precaution to the Westmead Children’s Hospital for further examination and was last reported to be in a stable condition on arrival.

It was a case of deja vu for the Careflight team who had to return to the Highlands a second time within 24 hours after an 11-year-old boy suffered neck injuries in a rugby union tackle during a schoolboy game at Tudor House.

The helicopter landed on the school’s rugby field and worked with ambulance paramedics to assess the boy's injury.

The CareFlight doctor said the boy, a border at the school, felt tingling in his arms and legs following a tackle during the game at the school oval.

As a precaution the boy was flown to the children’s hospital for further examination and was also in a stable condition on arrival.

The evening flight in overcast weather tested the Careflight flight crew’s new night vision goggles.
