The Department of Fair Trading has released a new product safety standard for portable soccer goal posts, sparked by the coronial inquest into India Verity's death.
The three-year-old Mittagong girl died after a set of soccer goal posts at the Church Road Soccer Ground fell on her and her mother Caroline in June 2003.
The NSW Products Safety Committee developed the new safety standard after a public inquiry set up last September, after the inquest held in Moss Vale.
The inquiry received 31 submissions, including one from the Veritys, who have criticised the new measures as not strong enough.
"The new standard will ensure that moveable soccer goals are designed in such a way that will reduce the risk of them tipping over," Fair Trading Minister John Hatzistergos said.
"(The Department of Fair Trading) will continue to work closely with manufacturers and soccer authorities such as Soccer NSW and Northern Soccer to inform and educate the community about the new safety standard."
The Veritys told The Illawarra Mercury they were concerned that the new product safety standard would only apply to new goal posts, not existing posts.
