Councillor Paul Tuddenham was elected Wingecarribee Shire’s deputy mayor in a closely-contested vote at Wednesday’s meeting.
The position was decided by a name drawn from a hat after the vote was split six all between Cr Tuddenham and Cr Duncan Gair.
Mayor Gordon Lewis brought his chains of office to the meeting in anticipation of a challenge, but was re-elected unopposed.
He congratulated Cr Tuddenham and thanked out-going deputy Nick Campbell-Jones for his work and loyalty over the past three years.
“Within the hurley-burley of local politics, unlike the State or Federal spheres, it is pleasing to have worked for the last three years with no knives in my back,” he said.
