A pile of sleepers lay ready to be assembled for a raised garden bed, the beginnings of a new hot house is clearly visible, and there are people buzzing around on a variety of tasks.
One man is supervising the fire ready for cooking, some are collecting fresh vegetables from the garden and others are preparing the meals.
It sounds like a scene from a self-sufficient community where everyone pitches in to help with the daily chores and that description is not too far from the truth.
The setting is the Anglicare Community Market Garden at Corlette Park in Moss Vale.
The atmosphere is alive with activity and the purpose is simple - to share a love of gardening.
The environment is best described by garden co-ordinator and permaculturalist Jill Cockram as “growing food and growing community’’.
Each Monday and Wednesday several volunteers gather at the gardens to create an environment that can be enjoyed by anyone in the community that has a keen interest in growing their own vegetables.
They take part in a variety of activities including seed saving, seed raising, composting, developing new garden beds and general plant care.
