The National Party could contest the seat of Hume at the next Federal election, members of the reinvigorated Southern Highlands National Party branch said this week.
Under a recently elected branch executive, the Southern Highlands branch is stepping up its activities at local, state and federal levels.
Although the National Party has a long association with the Southern Highlands, outpolling the Liberals on primary votes in 1996 after Liberal MP John Fahey’s resignation, chairman Valentine Tyson admitted the branch had been “a bit quiet” in recent years.
But Mr Valentine said the rejuvenation of the Southern Highlands branch showed that people still wanted a party to deal with rural issues.
“There has been a groundswell of support against the State Government because of its anti-council stance,” he said.
“A lot of people recognise the National Party is the only party that represents the coast and country and the Southern Highlands is still identified as a rural and regional seat.”
