Work on a project originally planned to mark the centenary of Moss Vale’s Diamond Jubilee Park in 1997 will finally begin next month.
Wingecarribee Shire Council has appointed tenders for the extension and beautification of Leighton Gardens.
The 12-week project, to begin in July, will include extending the gardens onto State Rail Authority (SRA) property, relocating and renovating the Diamond Jubilee fountain, stabilising the old weigh station hut and relocating the taxi stand and shelter.
Moss Vale Master Plan Committee chairman Duncan Gair said the project had been delayed by protracted negotiations over the lease of the additional land.
“A change in attitude by State Rail has allowed us to negotiate a long-term lease to take in the old weigh station building,” Cr Gair said.
Cr Gair said a hand-forged replica candelabra would be added to the fountain, which would become a focal point of the rejuvenated park.
The fountain was originally installed to mark Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee.
