More support for young people

The Editor

Dear Sir,

May I use your column to inform the public of my encounter, during the last weekend of school holidays, that I had with some very astute, motivated and caring group of young teenagers, using the Moss Vale Skate Board Complex in Kirkham Street.

My observations noted the caring, concerned and understanding manner, shown to each other, whilst using this complex.

The older teenagers and more experienced, used the area for a short period, then moving to a safety zone, giving way to the younger less-experienced riders.

One young fellow, whom I spoke to, proceeded to pick up the litter and clean the area, giving all and sundry a lecture on doing same.

I was informed that, they do not have any toilet facilities or drinking water available, at the complex, therefore needing to use Moss Vale TAFE and the football facilities, if they were open.

One very ugly (to me) looked like an old bus shelter rescued from the Council's reject backyard, was used as a toilet by some youth, much to the disgust of this young man, he in turn mentioned the need for expansion of the concrete area for the bigger and more daring youth, also the need to hold competitions among other village groups.

Surely Council's $500,000 being spoken of for a cycleway from Burradoo to Bowral may be put to other uses such as sanitation and drinking water for the young guns of our town, instead of catering to middle and older-age fitness freaks only, of Burradoo and Bowral.

To my eyes, our age group is quite adequately catered for with other sporting outlets, but as always, out of sight out of mind seems to be the norm for our youth.

Let them just keep trashing the TAFE, for these facilities.

Thanking you for your time,

Diane L Spence.

Moss Vale.
