Mittagong tow truck driver, woman killed on highway

15 Feb, 2012 04:07 PM
MITTAGONG tow truck driver and father of four Geoff Clark, and a 23-year-old woman he was helping, were killed by a passing courier truck on the Hume Highway, about 2km south of Mittagong, yesterday afternoon (February 15).

Police said the woman, who is believed to be from Springwood in the Blue Mountains, had broken down and the Mittagong-based tow truck driver, believed to be aged in his 40s, had stopped to help her when the accident happened.

Bowral detective Inspector Mark Wall said emergency services were called to the scene about 12.40pm and that units from Camden, Fairfield and Mittagong Highway patrols attended, along with Bowral general duties officers.

"The tow truck driver had stopped to help the female and they were both hit by the truck coming past," he said.

"Obviously, we ask any witnesses or passing drivers who saw what happened contact police."

The accident happened on a stretch of highway where there was less than a car-width of space for vehicles to pull off the side of the road.

Police said no traffic cones were found at the scene when emergency services arrived, although the tow truck's flashing lights were operating.

The woman and the tow truck driver died at the scene.

The driver of the truck was taken to Bowral Hospital to be treated for shock.

Police blocked two of the three south bound lanes, with the far right lane remaining open to traffic.

Crash and forensic investigation units are looking further into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Such a huge loss. The man involved was a lovely person, always had a smile on his face. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him; always there to help those in need.

My condolences and prayers to his family and the others involved.

Coming so soon after the tragedy of the Logan family deaths, there has to be a strong argument for getting these trucks off the road.

The government must consider more investment in freight to stop this carnage.

You have not got a clue what you would do without trucks, maybe suggest no cars and only public transport....... Yeah your comment is as stupid as that one.

RIP to all involved. May your families and friends find the strength to get through this horrible tragedy.

It's a tragic loss of life, but one question is" why were both people hit by this truck?"

Tow truck operator should have been advising car driver to remain away from the edge of the road.

This was a dangerous work area and should have been treated as such.

Sorry if I upset anyone with the reality of these comments.
