These were the squeals of delight and recognition that sounded recently as a group from the class of 1988-90 returned to the corridors of Moss Vale High School after 20 years.
Flashbacks of the old blue and grey tartan school dress came to mind as the group toured the school, pointing out the places they used to hang out, the spot outside the class for those in trouble and the rooms where they took their favourite subjects.
It was definitely a trip down memory lane that brought many cries of delight as old friends were reunited and, for one, a coincidental reunion took place with her former Year 2 teacher.
“I remember missing the bus and it was 4pm and mum wasn’t here and I waited out the front with Bev and I was getting worried,” Sally-Anne Stubbings said.
“And Bev was saying she’d put me up in her spare
room and I just wanted mum to come.”
Her Year 2 teacher, Bev McAndrew, remembers the young woman as a seven-year old because she attended the little girl’s birthday party all those years ago.
“In my 13 years teaching it was the only birthday party I was invited to, so I went,” she said.
All Mrs Stubbings had to say was, “Well, I loved her; she was my best teacher.”
“I had a few little tears when I heard she was here.”
The event came about after two years of planning on Facebook as Julie O’Brien tried to track down her former classmates who scattered after graduation.
“I don’t think I could have done it without Facebook and Friends Reunited,” she said.
“But it feels as though we never left.
“It doesn’t seem like 20 years.”
After the group toured their old high school they celebrated their reunion at Moss Vale Rugby Club and spent the rest of the weekend meeting each other’s families for a picnic at Lake Alexandra.
