Maree Byrne to represent Greens in March election

31 Jan, 2011 12:00 AM
BOWRAL woman Maree Byrne will take on sitting Goulburn MP Pru Goward for the Greens at the March NSW election.

The Goulburn and Southern Highlands Greens selected Ms Byrne and Southern Highlands' convenor Jim Clark said she was a high quality local candidate.

"Maree has been an active member of our group for many years and is a strong supporter of Greens policies and principles," he said.

"She has demonstrated a passion for sustainability and the environment through her work with CANWin (Climate Action Now Wingecarribee) and as a community member of Wingecarribee Council's Environment and Sustainability Committee.

"Her broad work experiences as a teacher in Malaysia, nurse and health educator in Dubbo and the far west region, and business owner in Canberra and the Southern Highlands give her a practical and 'down to earth' appreciation of the world and society.

"Maree is well known and highly regarded in her local community, is a hard worker and enthusiastically supported by her husband Geoff. She will be an excellent candidate in what will be a keenly fought battle for Goulburn."

Ms Byrne said she was in touch with local concerns.

"Having been a resident of the Southern Highlands for 15 years, involved in a successful business and community work, and with a background in farming and country town living, I am well placed to represent the Greens," she said.

"Like many in our community I am dismayed at the ineptness and loss of direction displayed by the Labor party, while the Liberals continue to follow the dictates of big business.

"The Nationals have betrayed their roots by supporting the mining and coal seam gas industries at the expense of their historic constituency, the agricultural community of the state.

"The Greens, as the third force in politics, are the party that can be trusted to stick to their word, and bring a long term perspective to their grass roots policy making decisions.

"I am proud to be their candidate."

Labor are the only major party left still to announce a candidate and expect to have one only month out from the poll in mid-February.

Tallong man Adrian van der Byl is running for the Christian Democrats and it is still unclear if there will be any independent candidates.

The Greens Peter Moran polled well in the Highlands at the federal election last August, taking 12 per cent of the primary vote in the seat of Throsby.

Ms Byrne will be hoping she can repeat this on March 26 at a state level.
