Local produce to line UK shelves

22 Oct, 2003 01:47 PM
Southern Highlands food wares could be lining the shelves of a United Kingdom department store after local producers showcased their wares to prestigious retailer Harvey Nichols.

A handful of Southern Highlands food and wine producers joined 120 businesses who met with Harvey Nichol's buying team last week at a product evaluation and tasting event in Sydney.

The event provided businesses with the perfect opportunity to showcase their wares to buyers, who are looking for produce to source their five UK stores and six restaurants.

Businesses with the best produce could then receive an export contract to supply the exclusive department store.

Anne Wilson from Harvest Ingredients, who showcased their dried spice dinner packs to buyers, said the Southern Highlands put on a great showing at the event.

"It was great to see familiar faces there, and its good to see our local people getting involved in exporting because it's a good feather to have in your cap if you achieve it," she said.

Christina Boyd Jones and Prue Bean from Dog River Gourmet Products have only been operating for six months but their selection of condiments attracted a lot of attention from buyers.

"One moment we're little market people and the next you're wearing your suits on the 44th floor of a Sydney building and you're doing big business," Ms Boyd Jones said.

"We were just so thrilled to go along, it's a great opportunity for us and we learnt a lot."

Jonathan and Alyssa Hatcher from the Alpine Berry Farm also received positive feedback for their berry cordials, jams and vinegars.

"The buyer said he could sell any of our products in the Harvey Nicks stores so it's a 50-50 chance of a contract," Mr Hatcher said.

"Whatever happens, the more of these sorts of things that you go to, the more chance you've got to get your products out there into the market."

The Harvey Nichols team will be looking for more quality New South Wales produce to feature in another Australian promotion next year.
