Local manufacturer feeling the effects of skills shortage

29 Jun, 2005 08:15 AM
Southern Highlands manufacturer Tyree Transformers is feeling the effects of a national skills shortage, and in particular a shortage of qualified engineers.

Tyree Transformers has been looking for a mechanical engineer for the past six months.

Advertisements in Sydney, Wollongong and local newspapers and the Internet and a search through five different employment agencies have brought a minimal response.

Tyree Transformers engineering manager George Foster said while graduate engineers were available from nearby universities, qualified and experienced engineers who wished to develop their career were difficult to find.

"Even though there are lifestyle benefits from being in the Southern Highlands, those wishing to grow and develop their careers tend to stay in the city," Mr Foster said.

Mr Foster said Tyree Transformers was trying to fill the vacancies with contract labour until positions could be filled permanently.

Tyree Transformers is a leading supplier of transformers to the Australian electrical industry and is an enthusiastic supporter of the local community, sponsoring local events and sporting teams and employing over 70 people.
