Legal experts to speak on anti-terrorism legislation

29 Nov, 2005 04:10 PM
Two legal experts will visit the Southern Highlands next week to speak on the implications of the anti-terrorism legislation currently before Federal Parliament.

A public meeting to discuss the legislation's impact will be held in the Henrietta Rose Room in Bendooley Place on Tuesday, starting at 7pm.

The meeting will be addressed by David Bernie, a barrister and vice-president of the New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties, and Dr Joan Staples, a visiting fellow at the Faculty of Law at the University of New South Wales.

The meeting has been organised by SOS, a group of concerned local citizens, in conjunction with Rural Australians for Refugees (Southern Highlands) and Amnesty International.

"We are a group of citizens who are concerned that there has not been sufficient public debate about such an important piece of legislation," SOS committee member Dr Helen McCue said.

"Major media organisations, the banks, Tim Costello from World Vision Australia, the former head of ASIO and major judges and lawyers have all been concerned about the implications of the legislation."

Dr McCue said the public meeting had been organised in order to bring closer scrutiny to the new laws.
