Larry wants debate on native vegetation clearing

22 Oct, 2003 01:49 PM
Residents who flaunt the law by clearing land of native vegetation will feel the full force of the law if Cr Larry Whipper has anything to do about it.

Cr Whipper is set to issue a challenge to council's general manager David McGowan at tonight's meeting, demanding he provide a report detailing all illegal land clearing breaches in the last 18 months along with any legal action taken to enforce them.

The councillor claims illegal clearing is rampant in the Highlands, with many actions in breach of the Nature Vegetation Act, the Threatened Species Act and Endangered Ecological Communities.

"This is an increasing problem and a lot of people are getting away with just a rap across the knuckles," Cr Whipper said.

"Because of all the loopholes and gaps in the system, some people are exploiting these gaps and we're not bothering to pursue them."

Cr Whipper said council didn't have adequate resources to fully enforce the relevant laws.

"This clearing is happening more and more with new people coming in especially in outside areas like Canyonleigh," Cr Whipper said.

"I want the general manager to provide me with details as to how much this has happened.

"I know I won't get the answer straight away but hopefully it will spark some debate."
