Joy-riders leave a trail of destruction

29 May, 2002 08:12 AM

JOY-RIDERS have left a trail of carnage in Bundanoon following a second night of motor vehicle madness in less than a week.

Petersen's Garage was targeted for the second time when vandals broke into the workshop before making off with a stolen Ford Falcon Futura and a Land Rover Discovery, both belonging to customers.

Unlike the last break-in when the intruders ransacked the office but found no cash or valuables, this time they made straight for the vehicles despite attempting to light a small fire by the rear door first.

Once on the loose in Bundanoon, the joy-riders have driven onto the school, Jordan's Crossing, Ferndale and Bundanoon Ovals before tearing up the neatly mowed turf through a series of circle work.

The beaten-up Futura was later found abandoned on the corner of Ringwood and Bundanoon Streets while the Discovery, which they tried to burn out, was dumped in Ferndale Road.

Camp Orana, a youth camp in Gullies Road, was also broken into during the mayhem as the thieves made off with a significant amount of cash, ice creams, cans of cola and a digital camera, although they left behind the software which operates it.

Camp operator Bob Bailey said he was considering extra security precautions after hearing about the damage last week and has now made that an urgent priority.

"This is going to cost a small fortune to put right as we also need to change all the locks in the place because they made off with 30 odd keys," he said.

"It's the nuisance factor and inconvenience more than anything.

"Even though I live near the camp, for the next few weeks I will be sleeping on-site and you can print that.

"I would never criticise our local police officer, Megan (Bailie-Mace), who works extremely hard but this does highlight the lack of police evident in Bundanoon.

"She can't be expected to do it all on her own - and the kids know that."

Last Wednesday morning also saw a car torched, a grass fire and Petersen's Garage vandalised in Bundanoon as rising crime becomes a major concern for villagers.

Police revisited the village again yesterday morning to take statements and assess the latest damage and are again appealing for any witnesses to call Bowral Police on 4862 9299.
