In 1809, two-year-old Betsy Broughton was one of only four people who survived the massacre of the crew and passengers of The Boyd at Whangaroa Harbour in New Zealand.
Rescued by Captain Alexander Berry – who later founded the town of Berry – Betsy sailed to Cape Horn, Lima and Rio de Janeiro before eventually returning to New South Wales in 1812.
At the age of 17, Betsy married Charles Throsby Jr, with whom she raised a family of 17 children at Throsby Park.
To mark the bicentenary of Betsy’s birth, a church service will be held on Sunday, November 18, at Bong Bong Church, which was established by Elizabeth and Charles Throsby.
