International film star signs on as festival patron

29 Mar, 2005 03:44 PM
International film star Hugo Weaving has signed on to become patron of a new film competition for the Bowral of Laughs comedy festival.

The star of the Matrix and Lord Of The Rings movie series will be the official patron of The Future Funny Filmmakers Competition, to be held at the comedy festival in November this year.

The Future Funny Filmmakers competition is a short comedy film competition specifically for school-aged students, which Bowral of Laughs organiser Anthony Ackroyd said would be the first of its kind in Australia.

"We wanted to place our energy in developing young film makers...we feel it's a very worthwhile," he said.

Ackroyd said he was ecstatic to have secured Weaving as patron for their new competition, having known the actor since they worked together on the movie Reckless Kelly.

"Hugo is incredibly popular with the (Future Funny Filmmakers) age group," he said.

"He's a major figure in the Australian and international film industry and a true supporter of emerging talent; I'm absolutely delighted to have Hugo on board as patron of our new competition."

Weaving himself was equally excited about being involved in the Future Funny Filmmakers venture.

"I'm proud to be the patron of this very exciting and worthwhile initiative; with Anthony at the helm I know it will be something special," he said.

Mr Ackroyd said Mr Weaving's involvement in the project could see the actor heading to the Southern Highlands for the Future Funny Filmmakers screening during the festival.
