Hume now marginal

26 Nov, 2007 07:44 AM
The previously safe Liberal seat of Hume is now marginal with only a potentially three per cent safety barrier after Saturday’s historic six per cent landslide swing to Labor.

A dejected sitting member Alby Shultz yesterday revealed he would retire before the next election

Mr Schultz will spend his last term on the Opposition benches knowing that recriminations will be the order of the day among the surviving but decimated Coalition members.

Mr Schultz held Hume with a 12.8 per cent buffer following the 2004 election.

But latest results show a 9.6 per cent swing against Mr Shultz on primary votes and 9.4 per cent on a two-party preferred vote.

Labor candidate David Grant said yesterday the most significant message out of the Labor landslide, which means a majority of possibly 24 or more seats, was the former Federal Government taking away over the past decade the rights of Australians, culminating in the rights of working people with the introduction of WorkChoices.
