Hume Highway investigation

20 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM

ROADS and Maritime Services (RMS) will investigate any road safety issues in the area where two people died in a horrific accident on the Hume Highway near Mittagong last Wednesday.

Twenty-three-year-old Sarah Frazer's car broke down on a section of the highway where the verge was not wide enough to fit her entire vehicle.

A southbound truck subsequently hit the car, which was overlapping the left lane of the highway and resulted in the deaths of Ms Frazer and Highlander Towing's Geoff Clark.

An RMS spokesperson said the information from its investigation would be provided to the state coroner as part of an inquiry into the cause of the accident.

"The standard for road shoulders states lanes should generally be one metre wide and two metres next to a safety barrier," the spokesperson said.

"The shoulder at this location is next to a safety barrier and is two metres wide, which complies with the standard."

Goulburn MP Pru Goward said the government needed to ensure the inquiry was completed quickly.

"Lets hope the coroner's inquiry is sooner rather than later," she said.

"If the inquiry is delayed, I will contact the police and ask if they would support an earlier inquiry.

"If there is community pressure for an urgent inquiry then I can certainly raise it with the roads Minister next week."

The young woman who was being helped by Mittagong tow truck driver Geoff Clark had been on her way to Wagga Wagga to start a new life.

Ms Frazer was beginning university to pursue her passion of photography.

Her car, brimming with her possessions, had failed her when she needed it most, breaking down along the way.

Mr Clark was in the process of securing her vehicle to be towed when they were struck by a courier pantech truck.

Ms Frazer's car could fit only partially in the road's shoulder.

She was from Springwood in the Blue Mountains and was described as "a truly amazing person''.

"A world traveller, fearless, funny, kind, strong willed, bright and beautiful,'' her aunt, Kristina, wrote on Facebook.

"She was my niece and my friend. I will miss her terribly."

Another relative described his family's grief on such a "very sad day", saying his "beautiful, intelligent cousin" had died "on her way to start a new life" at university.

Police were investigating the crash and the driver of the courier truck was assisting with inquiries.
