Hume, Gilmour candidates kick off campaign

31 Aug, 2004 03:48 PM
"Trust us" was the plea from all sides of politics as Hume and Gilmore candidates this week kicked off their campaigns for the October 9 Federal Election.

Member for Hume Alby Schultz said the election would be about whom the electorate trusted to keep the economy strong.

"Under the Howard Government, interest rates have been consistently low, unemployment is half what it was under Labor and businesses are experiencing real growth, thereby creating more jobs through a strong economy," he said.

"History has shown that Labor Governments preside over higher interest rates, tax increases and high union control which will be to the detriment of small business and economic growth.

"Families in the Hume electorate can't afford to pay the 17 per cent interest rates we experienced last time Labor was in power."

ALP candidate for Hume Graeme Shannon said his campaign would focus on health care, education and tax relief, as well as trust in government.

"We are committed to open and honest government that is accountable to the Australian public. This is in direct contrast to the Howard Government that has an extensive history of lying to the Australian people; on the GST, on the children overboard affair and on weapons of mass destruction."
