Horse flu epidemic a disaster, says local trainer

28 Aug, 2007 05:29 PM
To Sutton Forest racehorse trainer Rick Worthington, the equine influenza outbreak is "a disaster".

Mr Worthington owns Danric Lodge, and has more than 50 horses from Australia and overseas, 24 of them in full training.

"All their schedules have ground to a dead stop," he said.

"The ramifications aren't just what you see on face value. The whole thing is a disaster." Mr Worthington takes horses to Canberra and Goulburn three times a week to run on the big circuits but the ban on horse movement has caused them to miss seven sessions already.

"I've got two 1200 metre tracks here, a grass and a sand, but I only do slow work on them," he said.

"We've missed so many events. Far Star was supposed to race last Saturday. "
