History buff excited for new owner of Charlotte Medal

30 Jul, 2008 09:26 AM
NEWS that a rare First Fleet relic, the Charlotte Medal, will find a permanent home in the National Maritime Museum in Sydney has delighted Bowral history buff Evelyn Mahony.

Ms Mahony has been researching the Charlotte Medal - which she knows as the Botany Bay Medallion - for many years.

She has made it the focal point of her website on convict-era Australia.

When she learned that the medal was to be auctioned in Melbourne as part of a private collection of historic medals and coins, she was delighted it had finally surfaced but was concerned the medal might disappear forever from public view.

The sale of the medal to the National Maritime Museum for $750,000 means that this piece of convict history will remain in Australia.
