The Upper Nepean Groundwater Community Reference Group (CRG) has called for a five-year moratorium on development of a borefield to pump up to 45 billion litres of water from the Kangaloon aquifer to Sydney.
The group's draft report has found that plans to pump high quality drinking water from the aquifer to Sydney are inequitable to present and future generations of the Southern Highlands and did not follow ecologically sustainable development principles.
The group has called for a moratorium to allow more time for research.
"The community feels that this project has been rushed and the full implications of development cannot be ascertained in the short timeframe that investigations have occurred," the report said.
