The Southern Highlands will be used as a dumping ground for Sydney's wastes as a result of Blue Circle's plans to burn industrial and commercial waste at its New Berrima factory, Greens councillor Jim Clark said.
Cr Clark said State Government approval for the plan meant Blue Circle would be permitted to dispose of used tyres, carbon dust and other waste products in the mill.
"This approval means we will now effectively have a working industrial scale waste incinerator in our midst," Cr Clark said.
The approval follows a campaign of almost two years against the proposal by the group Residents Against Dioxins (RAD) and Wingecarribee Shire Council representations against the burning of wastes.
