NORMAN PYNE was a gentle man who refused to be inhibited by his blindness.
Mr Pyne, 56, was killed after being struck by a truck in Bowral on Tuesday afternoon.
Friends who knew Mr Pyne, who has been blind from a young age, said he never allowed his disability to interfere with the way he chose to live.
“He was always taking training courses and seeking employment. He finally found regular work as a receptionist with a local support service which helps families and carers,” Alice Rawe, a fellow radio announcer at Highland FM,?said.
“We first met Norm and his wife Michelle at a volunteering training course some years ago. He wanted to know how he could help people in need.
“We came to know Norm and Michelle through Highland FM.
“For several years Norm’s drive time programme followed ours and it was a constant joy to see Norm at the panel, somehow managing to work those buttons and slides, with Michelle standing behind him giving gentle guidance when needed.
“He just happened to have the perfect radio voice.
“Everybody at Highland FM liked and respected Norm, a true gentleman and a gentle man. It was a privilege to know him.”
Mr Pyne died just before 5pm on Station Street, Bowral, outside the Witchery store.
Police said a truck with a tipper and dog trailer was stopped in the southbound lane on Station Street, Bowral, at a traffic light intersection with Wingecarribee Street.
Mr Pyne was trying to cross Station Street and walked in between the truck’s tipper and dog trailer. When the traffic light turned green the truck drove away, unaware Mr Norman was in between the trailers.
In a tragic accident he was run over and died at the scene.
Members of the public stopped the truck at the Kangaloon Road roundabout at Moss Vale Road.
The driver, 49, was taken to Bowral Police Station for questioning and mandatory blood analysis tests. He was interviewed and released.
Forensic investigators attended the scene and impounded the truck, while police prepare a report for the Coroner. Inquiries are continuing.
Mr Pyne’s funeral will be held at St Thomas Aquinas Church, Bowral, from 11am on March 16.
