Southern Highlands and Goulburn areas will receive much-needed funds to help tackle rising bankruptcies, Fair Trading Minister Linda Burney announced.
For the first time, the Salvation Army’s Moneycare Goulburn will be given almost $30, 000 to provide financial services and counselling for those in need.
Member for Goulburn Pru Goward said that the funding was welcomed but was also long overdue.
“The NSW Coalition released a daunting analysis of bankruptcies across the state last month calling for assistance which reflects the scale and intensity of the problem,” she said.
“The Iemma Government was clearly shamed into taking action.”
The bankruptcy report revealed that the number of insolvencies in the Southern Highlands had risen dramatically over the last 12 months, particularly in the 2577 postcode, which recorded an incredible increase of 63.2 per cent.
