Federal funding for Bowral Public School lags $1.8 million year behind a private school with the same enrolment, due to the widening gap in funding for public and private education, NSW Teachers Federation representation Dr Michael Cotter said this week.
Dr Cotter said based on official figures in the 2007 Productivity Report on Government Services, each private school student received $3464 more in Commonwealth funding than public school students.
“Public school students had an annual allocation of $1051, while their private school counterparts enjoyed a per student figure of $4515,” Dr Cotter said.
“In the case of Bowral Public School, the discrepancy amounted to a total diminution of $1.8 million for the current year.
“The result of correcting that situation would be obvious for students whose tax-paying parents had enrolled them in a government school,” he said.
