More than 10,000 people are expected to gather at the Gallipoli Peninsula today to commemorate Anzac Day.

But Rod and Dympha Irwin remember the days before the tourists "discovered" Gallipoli, when only a handful of diplomats attended the first Anzac Day services there.

Mr Irwin served as first secretary to Sir Alan McNicholl, the first Australian Ambassador to Turkey, for two years in the early 1970s.
