Firing up service is the 'Inn' thing

Highlands residents have rallied behind a local fire station, their fundraising efforts making it the "best-equipped" brigade in the district.

During the past 12 months the Surveyor General Inn in Berrima, with the help of local John Davis, has raised more than $10,000 for the Berrima Rural Fire Service (BRFS) through Friday night raffles and hamper draws.

"It is locals helping locals," Surveyor General licensee Ross Durney said.

"We decided to support the brigade 12 months ago and the summer fires re-enforced what we are trying to do."

During the year the Inn has bought a positive pressure fan, hand-held radios, a GPS mapping monitor, rescue tools and uniforms.

"This time the Inn supplied us with $1000 worth of sealed lighting, that can be used in all situations and a $1500 generator to power them," BRFS captain Steve Webb said.

"We wouldn't survive without the support of residents in the area because when we start out all we are given is a truck and it is the fundraising that allows us to fit out the station.

"I can now safely say that thanks to the effort of both Ross and John we are now our 22 strong brigade is the best-quipped fire station in the district."
