Father's renal appeal

30 Sep, 2002 08:13 AM

The grieving father of renal sufferer Deborah Dammon has commended Member for Hume, Alby Shultz for jumping on board the Southern Highlands Renal Appeal (SHRA).

John Dammon has also issued a challenge to Highlands residents to help raise the $500,000 needed to set up a renal dialysis centre at Bowral Hospital.

"I wouldn't like Deborah to be forgotten for what she started," he said.

Deborah passed away on June 12 this year, only four days before the launch of the appeal.

"Her life may have been spared had a renal unit been available at Bowral Hospital - sadly enforcing Mr Shultz's forecast that 'the difference in time could mean life or death,'" he said.

"I know she would have benefited from the dialysis machine instead of travelling to St George.

"It was the travelling part that was killing her."

Mr Dammon said while he was in the Highlands he would assist the renal appeal by helping them raise funds.

"It is what she intended," said Mr Dammon.

SHRA chairperson Bob Barrett said more than $32,000 had already been raised from a number of events including a variety concert and trivia night. For more information or to donate money towards the renal appeal contact Mr Barrett on 4861 6599 or 0419 482 503.
