Fatal road crash shatters family

22 Feb, 2007 04:43 PM
The crash occurred about 9pm on Tuesday night when the Mitsubishi Magna, being driven by 41-year-old Warren Noel Barnes of Mittagong, lost control about four kilometres away from the Old Hume Highway and crashed into a tree at high speed.

"Everyone is very upset and mum and dad are shattered," Mr Barnes' sister Rhonda said yesterday.

"This is the second brother we've lost, to now lose the only one I had is very upsetting."

Her other sibling Terry died almost 20 years ago. Mr Barnes and his wife had three children James, 19, Claire, 16 and Thomas, 14.

Mr Barnes was killed on impact, but his 39-year-old wife Julie, who was in the passenger seat at the time, suffered severe head, chest and spinal injuries as well as fracturing one of her arms.

Emergency services attended the scene, but were unable to resuscitate Mr Barnes.
