Farmers find energy blowing in the wind

26 Sep, 2008 09:52 AM
FARMERS have used renewable energy for hundreds of years. The windmill has been part of the Australian landscape since the First Fleet arrived. Firstly they were used to grind grain and later to pump water.

Powered by wind they convert the energy into a more useful form.

Colin Munro from Cool Breeze Southern Highlands was first introduced to windmills when he worked as a jackaroo.

Mr Munro said working on the property where he worked in, WA there were 58 windmills on half a million acres.

“They work by turning wind power into turning power which then operates an up and down motion that drives the pump, sometimes 600 feet.

“An average size windmill which is eight foot, with a two and half inch pump, will pump around nine and a half thousand litres a day which is more than could possibly be used in any house,” he said.
