THE stitching and sewing has begun in anticipation of the Exeter branch of the Country Women’s Association’s next big fundraiser, Amazing Aprons in April Competition.
Last year, the group raised more than $17,000 for breast cancer from its Crazy Cozy Competition.
The group hopes Amazing Aprons will catch the imagination of people the way that Crazy Cozies did. The branch received more than 400 entries from around the world.
This time, money raised will go to the Southern Highlands branch of Can Assist and The Jean Colvin Cancer Centre.
Can Assist helps cancer patients and their families in a variety of ways, from practical support to financial help.
This is done through a network of volunteers and members.
The Jean Colvin Cancer Centre is part of Can Assist, providing accommodation for cancer sufferers and carers needing treatment in Sydney.
The charity is close to CWA member Lynn Harris’ heart.
“I have had experience with Can Assist when I was looking after my husband five years ago,” Mrs Harris said.
“They worked in with the palliative care team because we had him at home,” she said. “It was just a link to facilitate all sorts of services that Can Assist has for people dealing with cancer.”
Wanting a fun and creative competition, CWA Exeter decided to bring back the apron.
The competition has four categories; festive occasions, posh pinnies, real men wear aprons and yesteryear.
In an exciting twist the women are also creating aprons signed by celebrities to be auctioned on the day.
So far they have Tony Abbott on board. Nicole Kidman is in their sights.
Entries close on April 1, 2011, and must be accompanied by an entry form and $5 entry fee.
All aprons become the property of the Exeter CWA and will be offered for sale on April 16, 2011, at Exeter Village Hall.
So dust off the sewing machine and let the imagination run wild to create wild and completely original aprons.
