Dream home ambushed by rock-hurling vandals

30 Jan, 2002 07:34 AM

A reward is being offered for information leading to the prosecution of vandals responsible for smashing a young Bowral man’s dream home yesterday.

The man’s dad Peter Robertson said his 21-year-old son, who doesn’t want to be identified, is devastated at the early morning attack.

He said vandals hurled rocks through at least three windows of the partly completed Alice Avenue house at about 1am.

One of the rocks sailed right through a bedroom wall and landed in the living area.

Trees on neighbouring council land were also uprooted.

“Building this house is his dream and now he has to put up with this scum,” Mr Robertson said.

“I want to make sure these kids are caught and I’m putting up a (undisclosed) reward.”

Police inspected the damage and talked to residents yesterday in an attempt to identify the offenders.

Neighbour Tracey Rutten said she and her husband were up at the time of the incident and spotted three males aged “about 14 or 15”.

“I heard one of them say ‘Chris, run’ when one of the windows was smashed,” Mrs Rutten said.

“My husband stood outside with a shovel to make his presence felt and they ran off.

“I don’t think they expected to be disturbed.”

Mrs Rutten said one of the offenders was wearing a white shirt but she couldn’t provide any further descriptions because of poor light.

She said the recently developed East Bowral street has been the target of similar attacks over the past six months.

“They stole our Santa and other Christmas decorations,” she said.

Mr Robertson, who works at Wingecarribee Shire Council, believes crime is on the increase in the estate as vandals and thieves prey on semi-completed houses in quiet and poorly lit areas.

“Many of the larger housing companies now have a policy where they won’t install appliances until after the hand-over,” he said.

“Thefts in the area are that bad.”

Mr Robertson urged residents and new home owners in the East Bowral area to be vigilant and report all incidences of vandalism and other criminal activity to the police.

“Surely, there are parents out there who know their child was out after midnight. I ask those parents to find out what they were up to,” he said.

And as for those responsible for damaging his son’s property, Mr Robertson warned; “I know one of you is named Chris”.
