Donors helping to save lives

27 May, 2005 08:09 AM
Southern Highlands blood donors will have helped save up to 600 lives by the end of today when the Red Cross' brand-new state-of the-art Donormobile leaves the St Jude's Anglican Church where it has been collecting blood for the last four days.

The new mobile blood collection unit is the third of its kind in NSW and is capable of taking up to 50 donations and providing life-saving blood products for up to 150 people each day.

And if the 200 donations expected to be collected this week are reached by the end of today, that means Southern Highlands donors in four days will have helped save up to 600 lives, Red Cross Blood Service Southern Region spokesperson Richard Webb said.

Speaking on the first day of operation in Bowral this week, Mr Webb said local donors response to the new facility has "been absolutely wonderful".

"It's been a tremendous response with nearly a full day of appointments," he said. "We are very excited about this new donor facility which reinforces our commitment to provide the community with more choice and options as to where they donate by spreading services further into the community."
