The Editor
Dear Sir,
Like all Australians, I was horrified by the terrorist attacks against the United States which resulted in the enormous loss of innocent lives.
Last week, in recognition of the great sorrow these attacks have brought, I joined with my Parliamentary colleagues in an expression of condolences to those people affected by the tragic events.
Those responsibilities for the attacks must be brought to justice and be punished for their crime.
Australia should do everything possible to help the United States in their time of need but this is also a time for cool heads and reason.
I acknowledge the fear and anger many of us feel but courage, compassion and respect for the rule of law needs to guide us.
The Australian Democrats have called for any military response to the terrorist attacks to be proportional - we cannot strike out blindly.
On a matter as serious as this, Parliament must have the opportunity to examine any commitment of Australian troops.
Australia has a responsibility to help foster peace and in doing so strike back at those who attempt to assault our freedom.
Yours faithfully,
Senator Natasha Stott Despoja,
Leader of the Australian Democrats
Canberra.
