Councils eyes off Bessemer Street land for planned family community centre

24 Dec, 2008 02:22 PM
WINGECARRIBEE Shire Council has nominated land at Bessemer Street, Mittagong, as the site for a planned family and community centre.

Council last week agreed to begin planning for the multi-purpose centre housing organisation, which will serve families and children.

After considering sites, including the Four Square Church, Mittagong shire library and senior citizens centre, Council determined that the site at Bessemer Street was the best alternative.

Community groups including Wingecarribee Family Support Service, KU Children’s Services (Occasional Child Care Centre), Relationships Australia, and the Mittagong Children’s Garden Group had previously expressed interest in developing the disused Mittagong Bowling Club building as a family and community centre.

However, a public trust on Alexandra Square prevents the use of the clubhouse as a community centre.
