Council won't fund BEC

27 Aug, 2004 07:50 AM
The future of the Goulburn-based Business Enterprise Centre (BEC) looks bleak, following a decision by Wingecarribee Shire Council not to contribute funds to save the centre.

The BEC has appealed to Wingecarribee, Greater Argyle, Upper Lachlan and Boorowa Councils to meet the $75,000 shortfall resulting from the withdrawal of State Government funding. Local Chambers of Commerce had also pledged support for the centre.

Wingecarribee Shire Council was asked to contribute $20,000 a year over three years for the centre.

Council's Economic Development Committee voted against funding the BEC after receiving advice that iTech, the successful tenderer for the State Government funded Illawarra BEC "Supercentre" would serve the Southern Highlands one day a week and that additional business development and advisory services were available through the State Government's Department of State and Regional Development.
